Community Leadership

Leadership sets the example.

In addition to appealing to individuals to participate in experiences that reinforce commonalities they share with other Jews, Tikvat Yisrael has called upon community leadership to take intra-communal cooperation to the next level. We have organized the Upper West Side Leaders council as a prototype leadership core. This group is made up of the leadership of a number of Upper West Side Jewish community organizations who operate (for the most part) in the same physical space and, within their own constituencies, share common goals and face common challenges.

We have convened meetings and discussions between the leaders that have led to many collaborative efforts. These include: two cross-community oneg programs that were cosponsored by three or more community organizations (a third will take place in January); a community fundraiser for the Tsunami disaster with unprecedented cross-community organizational sponsorship; the implementation of a rotation of visiting prayer services at Tikvat Yisrael services/dinner events; discussions with the JCC and other leaders; and other collaborative endeavors.

We hope that by bringing the leadership of the community together that we can further emphasize the commonality that we share in our dedication to prayer. While the environments, words, ideas, songs and language may differ from organization to organization, prayer binds us all together as parts of one unified Jewish community.
